The Heat Is On: Lose Your Summer Buns!

As the weather heats up, I’m sure you’re noticing – and smelling – that the neighborhood grills are heating up, too! Barbecue season is fast approaching, and we welcome the fun, convenience, ease and deliciousness of barbecuing with open arms. However, we aren’t as welcoming toward the greasy, calorie- and fat-laden foods that often come with it – at least I’m not.

I’ve got to confess: as silly as it sounds, I debated attending a friend’s barbecue last weekend. I had been on a great health kick, exercising frequently and avoiding fattening foods. Frankly, I didn’t want to tempt myself and surrender to a high-calorie cheeseburger and snacks, blowing a great health kick in one evening. It just wasn’t worth it to me.

On the other hand, I also felt it wasn’t worth compromising my social life to maintain a healthy lifestyle. That didn’t seem right. There should be a middle ground, a way to attend social gatherings, enjoy the food and not feel guilty about it. So I decided to get proactive and figure out a way to reduce an 800-calorie cheeseburger down to a 280-calorie version that would be barbecue season friendly!

Flatout FOLD It Burger

The 280-Calorie Flatout FOLD It Cheeseburger

  • 1 Flatout FOLDit Flatbread: 100 calories
  • 1 Tomato: 4 calories
  • 1 slice of fat-free Kraft American Cheese: 30 calories
  • 1 95% lean beef burger patty: 140 calories
  • 6 Pickles: 6 calories
  • Add ketchup and mustard to taste

Slimming down your cheeseburger is not the only way to lessen your calorie intake during grilling season. There are many seasonal side dishes that are scrumptious and filling. When conscious of your calorie intake at parties, we suggest bringing one or more of the ideas below. If you don’t think one of these dishes will be present at the barbecue, find a way to make it happen! Not only is it nutritionally responsible for you, but you’ll also score points for good manners with the hosts for lessening their load!

Grilled vegetables

Throw your favorite veggies (onions, tomatoes, red and green peppers, corn on the cob, etc.) on the grill! You’ll be amazed at how filling and delicious fiber-rich grilled veggies are.

Fruit salads

Fruit salads are the perfect potluck dish to bring. They are nutritious, easy to prepare, and full of fun colors. Chop up your favorite fruits and bring them in a pretty bowl – just don’t forget to grab it on the way out!

Dips and spreads

Bring hummus and salsa, along with chopped up veggies and Flatout EdgeOn Crisps for dipping. As long as you dip in moderation, you’ll have a very healthy potluck on your hands!

Great tips! I like your version of the burger MUCH better than a regular burger – regular buns are always so tasteless and have the consistency of air! Nice job!

Looks great – I substitute a veggie burger to save a few more calories (even though I’m not vegetarian).

Thanks, Tanya! Veggie burgers definitely make a great substitute. What is your favorite brand?
