Don’t Let Bad Weather Rain On Your Parade!

I’ve got to confess. When it rains on a weekend summer day, I usually don’t take it well.  I spend the whole week looking forward to beautiful weather and when it doesn’t happen, I usually spend the day cooped up indoors, wishing it wasn’t raining.

But last weekend, my family and I refused to let the rain ruin our weekend.  We spent a rainy Saturday afternoon together, eating great food, watching a hilarious movie and having an all around blast. Below are 10 great ways to make the best out of a rainy weekend day!

Rainy Day

  1. Catch up with a longtime friend or family member. With our hectic, busy schedules, it is sometimes hard to keep in touch with friends and family who don’t live nearby. Take the time to write an email or make a phone call to catch up with friends and family members who are long overdue for a catch-up.
  2. Write a “Just Because” card. This is a great activity, because we often don’t write thank you cards “just because.” Write a hand-written note to a colleague, friend or loved one to thank them for nothing other than being them. You may want to get out stickers and markers and have your kids join in. What better time than at a young age to show them the power and fun of a thank you?
  3. Cook a meal as a family. Cook a time-consuming or extravagant dinner together as a family that you usually wouldn’t have time to prepare because you’re busy with outdoor summer activities. Assign tasks to everyone. Dad can handle dessert, Mom can handle dinner and the kids can help with child-friendly contributions such as washing vegetables, measuring and mixing ingredients.
  4. Bake as a family. Bake fun, creative and delicious treats as a family. You can all contribute and express your creativity, putting personal touches on your baked goods. You can also give the baked goods to friends, family and colleagues if you make extra treats.
  5. Check off a major to-do. At Flatout, we are proponents of getting stuff done! Take the day to accomplish a major chore you’ve been putting off. This could be cleaning out the basement, organizing a closet or cleaning a huge laundry load. Although it may not be so fun, the payoff is huge. And more importantly, you won’t have to waste a beautiful sunny day doing the chore you’ve been putting off.
  6. Go to your local library. Take your family to the library and check out a bunch of books. What better day to curl up with a good “page turner” than a rainy one?!
  7. Dinner and a movie. Take the family out to dinner and a movie you can all watch together. If it’s too gross to venture outdoors, rent a movie, watch one you own or one that’s on TV, and order in.  The funnier the movie, the better!
  8. Workout indoors. Pop in a workout video, and break a sweat. Leslie Sansone is a personal favorite of mine.
  9. Play games. Set up a favorite board game, and spend the day playing games as a family. No cheating allowed!
  10. Indulge in a great family dinner. Go to your family’s favorite restaurant and celebrate the fact that you get to spend the whole day together!

  • How do you like to spend personal time on a rainy day?
  • Do you live in an area where rain is abundant or scarce during the summertime?
