Roughin’ It to Feel Fabulous

Above, my friend Elyse is grilling a delicious – and healthy – dinner. When a group of my friends first suggested spending a weekend camping in the great outdoors, I wasn’t exactly thrilled. Don’t get me wrong – I love a day spent outdoors, but at night, I have no qualms about going back inside to sleep.

As my friends made a checklist of necessities for our weekend getaway – multiple bottles of bug spray at the top – an array of excuses ran through my mind. I just didn’t see the point. Now, after a fabulous weekend, it is clear to me that roughin’ it isn’t so rough after all!

Below are four reasons why camping can make you feel fabulous, if you do it the healthy way!

1. Simplicity. A change of pace is always healthy. Although I prefer a beach vacation when in need of a getaway, the simplicity of camping definitely provides a refreshing retreat, making it easy to appreciate life’s simple pleasures. Good company, beautiful nature and delicious food are in abundance, while smart phones, the Internet, television and other day-to-day distractions aren’t valued in the wilderness. For one weekend, there’s no use for a wireless signal. Thank goodness for that!

2. Fitness. If there was ever a time to take a hike or hop on a bike, this is it! With the beautiful trails most camping sites offer, a camping getaway provides the ideal environment for hiking and biking. Also, when home, day-to-day obligations can make it difficult to find an ideal time to workout. When on a camping getaway, there’s nothing stopping you from getting in some physical activity.

3. Cuisine. This component of camping is crucial. When working with your companions on devising a grocery list prior to the getaway, plan well. Don’t bring bags of fattening snacks to pick at all night. If you bring them, chances are, you’ll eat them… all of them!

Here are a few additional thoughts on cuisine:

  • Deliberately pack healthy snacks. Chopped veggies, chopped fruit, pretzels, Flatout Crisps, salsa, low fat hummus and low fat guacamole are all great options.
  • Prepare healthy meals. On our camping getaway, we grilled low fat hot dogs, chicken and turkey burgers. We brought veggies such as peppers, tomatoes and onions and threw those on the grill as well.  We wrapped all meats in Flatout wraps and Flatout FOLDIts, and we used healthy condiments such as ketchup, mustard and even salsa and guacamole. Just like when you grill at home, do it the healthy way.
  • Make room for dessert. The thought of camping sans s’mores is pretty devastating. Don’t deprive yourself of the s’more experience. Just be mindful of the size of the piece of chocolate bar you use. If you enjoy the roasted marshmallow most, eat one s’more, and eat two or three roasted marshmallows alone sans graham cracker and chocolate.

4. Bonding. Last but certainly not least: camping is a great bonding experience for you and your companions. This is a rare time where life’s day-to-day distractions simply aren’t involved. There are no phones or computers to divert your attention away from your friends. Enjoy your company and take advantage of time spent around the fire with nothing else to do but relax. Don’t think you need to break out into a round Kumbaya. Bonding comes naturally when camping. Working together to pitch a tent, make a fire and cook together while having nothing to do at night but sit around a fire sharing jokes, games and laughter makes for a natural – and fun – bonding experience.

Looking for a refreshing, inexpensive and enjoyable getaway? Rough it with family or great friends and come back feeling fabulous – especially after your first shower!

What makes me feel fabulous when camping is spending time with my husband and two sons doing activities we enjoy together: hiking, birdwatching and wildlife watching, fishing .
We like to end the day by roasting marshmallows over the fire, making s’more and enjoying telling stores and sharing memories.

We like to camp out in Texas (where we live) and in Colorado.

I don’t think s’mores and hot dogs are too healthy, but those are musts for us when camping out!
We also enjoy fresh fruit when camping. And we bring some carrot and celery sticks for snacking. And we like to eat beans and chips with our hot dogs. Beans are good for you and there’s a lot of healthier chips on the market now.
We will for sure be bringing some Flatout Bread products along on our next camping trip now that I have discovered them!
