Cheese: Friend or Foe?

My answer: friend!

Although cheese isn’t a go-to recommendation for dieters, it often gets thrown under the bus before we even have a chance to consider throwing it on top of our favorite salads and wraps. Cheese is a calcium-rich condiment that many brands offer in fat free, reduced fat or low sodium varieties.

For example, check out fat free cheese and tomato sauce on this Light Flatout Pizza. Delicious!

Next time you are at the grocery store, make sure to check out my top three favorite cheeses below.

Goat Cheese. I absolutely love goat cheese. Its thick, creamy texture is extremely satisfying, and works well as a spread. When I entertain or when preparing an appetizer for my family, I love to serve goat cheese on a tray with Flatout Crisps and tons of chopped veggies, such as chopped carrots, celery, cucumbers and zucchini.

Brie. I think Brie tastes best when baked. Paired with a glass of red wine, Brie is another wonderful appetizer. This type of cheese is rich, so a little bit goes a long way. This baked Brie with cranberry apple chutney appetizer is delicious, and you don’t need to eat a lot to satisfy your cheese craving. Throw Flatout Light Wraps in the oven for a few minutes when baking your Brie. Coupled together, the combination is mouth-wateringly delicious!

Feta. Feta is my favorite cheese. And, just like the two other cheeses listed above, a little bit goes a long way. Feta is a lower fat option than other hard cheeses, and can be used in salads, sandwiches or baked. Feta is ideal for salads. I like to sprinkle a bit on top of my favorite salad recipe below.

Greek Chopped Salad

Ingredients:

  • Mixed greens
  • Chickpeas
  • Chopped beets
  • Black olives
  • Chopped cherry tomatoes
  • Chopped carrots
  • Chopped onions
  • Corn off the cob
  • Chopped celery
  • 3 reduced fat tablespoons of feta
  • Fat free Greek dressing

This salad tastes great folded in a Flatout Light Wrap, which I often toss in a Tupperware and take to work for lunch.

Finally, below are some of my favorite low fat and fat free cheeses that I buy at the grocery store to keep in the house. They are perfect when watching your portion size, too. Enjoy!

Kraft Fat Free Shredded Cheese

Weight Watchers Reduced Fat Whipped Cream Cheese

Weight Watchers Sting Cheese

Sargento Fat free Ricotta Cheese

Kraft Fat Free Cheese Slices (Tastes great in a Flatout FOLDit for Flatout grilled cheese!)

Fiber One Cottage Cheese

Trader Joe’s Fat Free Crumbled Feta

The Laughing Cow Light Cheese Wedges

The Laughing Cow Mini Babybel Light

Other Weight Wachers Cheeses we love

Cheese is a condiment that many of us crave. At Flatout, we’re huge proponents of satisfying a craving – the healthy way. Portion control coupled with a tasty recipe makes for absolutely no reason to cut cheese from your diet, especially when a little bit of cheese goes a long way.
