Last week, Rachel of Following In My Shoes created a bento lunch box that had us absolutely intrigued. It’s one trend we had yet to investigate – but are practically giddy about the entire world of bento we’ve discovered since. It certainly gives a delightful new meaning to playing with your food!

What is bento?

According to Wikipedia, bento is a “single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shapped container.”

Many of the pictures we’ve seen are of a particular style called “oekakiben” or “picture bento” – which Wikipedia describes to be lunch boxes “decorated to look like people, animals, buildings and monuments, or items such as flowers or plants.”

What we love most about bento, is that these decorated boxes were originally created to inspire children to expand their eating habits!

This creative trend has certainly got our wheels turning, and you can expect some Flatout bento creations to come in the following weeks. In the meantime, here are some of our favorite bento creations to spark inspiration of your own!
